As you all know, I got a new boy today. Don't feel sorry for me, it only means I have 17 kids now. I've got it way easy compared to a lot of you. Anyway, I found out his name at 8:07am this morning and by 8:30 when he was introduced to me, I had a journal, homework folder, math journal, and writing folder personalized for him just like all his new classroom friends. I also added him to the name chart, the behavior chart, and the attendance lunch board.
I know, I know, I'm amazing. Even my first grade friends complimented me. Like, a lot. They were all, "Mrs. M. where is new boy going to put his writing today? Oh, you ALREADY made him a folder!" Then there was a quiet whispering about how amazing I am. I took an actual bow and told them I'd been around the block before.
He will be a bit of a
shock challenge since he's moved a lot because of the pathetic state of our economy. We have a shelter in our town and he is there with his family for now. So I have decided to love him even harder and make the next few months be a place of respite even as I want to
pull my hair out help him through some older material.
My kids were angelic and really showed him how our classroom works. This helped me see too how clearly they can articulate our classroom culture and routines. Yeah!
He is so lucky to have you. You are exactly what this little guy needs. Your blog looks great.

He is lucky to have someone who cares so much. Hopefully he is life will get more stable. The children I've had from shelters haven't stayed around very long. I wonder what's become of some of them.

You ARE amazing! I am also impressed with your school for letting you know ahead of time that you will be getting a new student.
ReplyDeleteAt our school, it seems like the kids just show up and someone brings them to our rooms. No warning. So we're left with trying to keep our faces from showing the panic that is building inside!
