It's not fair!

I'm on vacation, so I'm going take a little side step into my home life. I have two children, a four year old daughter Annie and a six year old son Felix. Today I decided that the kids needed haircuts and some new sneakers.

Anyway, the three of us head out. Felix lost his first tooth yesterday so he's telling anyone who will listen. Annie is hauling around this very blonde American Girl doll. I mention that she is very blonde because Annie tells me regularly that only blonde people are pretty (PS I have very dark hair). She says, "I love you Mommy, but you are NOT blonde." End. Of. Story.

Breathe in the pink...

Anyway, long story short too late, after the haircut, we go to get the sneakers. First she wants the light up Sketchers, too big. She agrees to the multi-color Nikes, also too big. If you have a four year old daughter, you know exactly where this is going. If not, stay with me. Finally, we look at the orange running sneakers, they don't have Annie's size either...but wait Felix likes them too and they DO have his size. We go up to the counter.

There is a brief silence and then...an insane screaming from a teeny tiny girl with blonde hair, "IT'S NOT FAIR! IT'S NOT FAIR!IT'S NOT FAIR! IT'S NOT FAIR!" breathe, breathe  "I can't breathe! I can't breathe!" breathe breathe "IT'S NOT FAIR!" Blue face.

I don't think the 19 year old sales guy knew what hit him. I calmly paid. Then picked her up and walked out of the store.  I am grateful that she only weighs 32 pounds because I am not that big either. I told her life stinks when you can't find shoes in your size. I totally agreed that it wasn't fair, but there wasn't much I could do about it.

She cried almost all the way home until something Felix said made her laugh and it was as though nothing had ever happened.

Vacation can feel remarkably like teaching First Grade. I love it, but man is it exhausting.

  1. I can soo identify with your daughter. I found these super cute shoes two weeks ago, they did not have my size. I even bought the size smaller thinking that I could "make" them work. Well I can't. I couldn't even "make" it around my living room. They are going back. It is not fair! :)

  3. I have the same problem...except with my three-year-old (today!!) son. He thinks that whenever he goes to the shoe store, he has to have the EXACT same shoes that he already has. Let me tell you, if they don't have his size...EVERYONE knows it!

  5. I love your family story. Annie sounds like a real character :)) I haven't told anyone yet (I mean in the blogging world ~ you're the first ~ but our son and his soon-to-be wife are expecting their first baby and if it's a boy they're thinking of naming him Felix!!!! Another connection :)) Ha ha. Take care, Kimberley.
