Local Books

This vacation has been spent at the library and at home with my children. It's gotten me thinking about next year with my First Graders. I think I want to try to do the whole year using books by Maine authors and illustrators and/or books about Maine. My original intent with my website was to start thinking about how to teach more about local things. I want 6 and 7 year olds to feel very connected to the town and state they live in.

Community is one of the themes we are supposed to teach in our district. So this could coincide beautifully. I have begun to research these authors and illustrators and am keeping notes on my research in another area of my blog. Click here to view.

I think one important thing that I need to do is write some grants this summer to get money to pay for Maine books for my library. I also need to get the word out there that this is how I want to stock my  classroom library so that people can make donations to my room. Luckily I know how to write grants since I used to work for non-profits and I have a special graduate degree in Non-Profit Administration and Management.

  1. Such a great idea, and so many talented Maine authors and illustrators to choose from! :) Of course Blueberries For Sal and One Morning In Maine leap immediately to mind in the picture book category :)

  2. I love that idea! I also love vacations at the library and home. I'm working on a field trip that will be a walking tour of an older part of town that used to be its own village. It has maintained a quaint close community feeling. I think it will end at the candy emporium! Dark Chocolate!!

  4. As soon as I saw it, I LOVED your blog design. Knew it was "Maine" at first glance (and I am from the other side of the continent!). Good luck building your Maine library. I think that instilling in our kids the knowledge, culture, history and love of where they live is a fabulous gift.
