Classroom Management

There are a million things I want to work on this year in my teaching, but a friend of mine (who is like a mentor) always tells me to focus on one thing.  So I want to cheat work on 4 kinds of classroom management: 1) behavior management, 2) classroom organization, 3) how I keep my lesson plans, and 4) tracking student achievement. I know these are a lot of things to work on, but I kind of know where I am going.

behavior management
I want to use Brag Tags with beads like Sandra does at Sweet Times in First. Click on the picture to see her system and check out her great blog.

classroom organization
I want to organize my room so that kids aren't crowded into one space. So the library will be divided up into picture books, non-fiction books, and focus of the month books. The math manipulative will be  set up in centers somehow. I haven't figured this out yet--must look at pinterest. I am looking for a nature theme. I have been painting rocks to use for letter identification, sorting, and site words (more on that later this summer).

how I keep my lesson plans
I want to use the system DeeDee Wills uses. She links everything in her lesson plan electronically to the corresponding work and books. It's an amazing resource. I can only attempt to be like her because she is practically perfect.

There are so many examples of her lesson plans, that I think you should just click on her button and the link will take you to all of her Peek at my Week posts.

tracking student achievement
Finally I want to find an app for my iPad where I can quickly track student achievement and challenges throughout the day. I don't want a file stuck somewhere else that I review right before report cards.

As always I welcome all suggestions or tips for examples of teachers using great management techniques that work.

  1. Hi Kimberley,

I love all of the above ideas and can't wait to check out the blogs. Of course, I'm very interested in Tracking Student Achievement. If you find a good way to do that, please post, or let me know. For now, I'm off to check into DeeDee's lesson plans!

  6. I'm off to check out those lesson plans. Please let us know if you find that app. I'm guilty too of not looking at some things until right before report cards. Good luck with your goals!

  7. That's good advice. Working on one or two things is usually the way to go.

  8. I loved reading your reflections.. you sound a lot like me... debating between 2 things really looking at the good and the bad and taking the pieces that work for you. As far as assessment goes, have you seen this site, http://threering.com/ ? I have not used it yet but I pinned it to look into.

  10. Great blog ( I found it through your Nerdy post today). I especially like the picture in the banner at the top. Being from Maine, do you know Susan Dee (@literacydocent)?

One app you might want to try is CONFER. there is a free version to try out and he's always making improvements. I've heard a lot of people talk about using EVERNOTE for kid notes as well.

Thanks for your Nerdy post and this great blog as well.
