Kindergarten

I love teaching First Grade, but I have to admit that my dream is to teach Kindergarten. I taught Pre-K for a couple of years right after college and loved that beginning stage. I am so drawn to websites like...
Rubber Boots and Elf Shoes
Mrs. Wills Kindergarten
Herding Kats in Kindergarten
Kinder Kraziness
A Place Called Kindergarten
Camp Kindergarten

There are so many others that I check in with every day to see what I can learn. Part of the thrill of summer for me is that for a little while I get to plan for Kindegarteners. My kids will be young when they come in and I'm allowed to use the first 4-6 weeks to get to know them and reinforce Kinder skills. I also don't have to be hyper-focussed on testing and first grade standards during the first month as we get to wait until October. I love this part!

I love working with the alphabet (click on my Pinterest button at the top of my page to see what I've pinned)

I adore pre-reader books
Miss Rhonda's Readers
Brand New Readers

There are also so many fabulous picture books out there that I love young children to be exposed to. They have unrestrained lust for new information and no filter when it comes to discussing them. Discussions with them about books gives me so many cool ideas and new jumping off points.

I am so excited to do a book study with Mrs. Wills Kindergarten because I love her blog and how she electronically organizes her weekly schedule. I want to do that this year for sure so I'll be studying her carefully.

What is your favorite part of the year? What grade would you be teaching if you could do anything?

  1. Hey Kimberly!! I just stumbled upon your blog and became a new follower :) This will be my 2nd year teaching, so I'm not quiet sure. I taught 2nd last year and kinda sorta pretty much hated it :/ It was such a bizarre age. lol. I taught preschool for 4 years, but I think I'm geared more for the older ones. I'm looping to 3rd next year so we'll see!! I can be very goofy when I teach, so I'm not sure how my students will respond as they start to "go through personal changes" haha :)

  2. Well, over the past 27 years (egads, can I be that old ??) I have taught everything from JK to Grade 8. Loved certain aspects of each year, I always say, every age group has their charms. I spent 11 years in JK and SK and I adored it ! Such an amazing time in a child's life and I enjoyed working with parents too as they trust you with their baby, for many their first time flying the coop. I have taught Gr. 2 the past 3 years and really, really love it. I think it is a perfect age, still very innocent but just old enough to joke with and have fun with, a very exciting year of growth and discovery. I find this is the year many become true readers as they make the jump to chapter books and novels. My group this year is very bright, all very strong readers. I also have a lot of strong personalities and a couple very troubled, challenging behaviours so it has been a busy year. We worked on our class lists this year and I felt glimmers of excitement thinking of new beginnings, new faces, new challenges. Next year's class will be much, much weaker with several identified children. They also are a very sweet, friendly, good natured bunch.....I love that we get to start fresh each fall. Fav. time of year, hmmmm. New beginnings are exciting but exhausting as you try to get back into routines etc. I do love the Fall and the new year though, so many possibilities. Wow, what a long post. Can you tell I still have reports to finish ?? I better use my writing skills to describe my kiddies and get the reports done !! Thanks for the fun forum to chat :)

  3. Hey You!

I would definitely be teaching FIRST! I have to admit something, though, I very much *dislike* the beginning of first grade...so much so that I often drag my feet into my principal's office each year and say "If you have an opening in second next year - I want it". Seriously, I don't do little-little very well anymore. So, you and I are complete opposite in that regard! HA! By about October I'm a happy girl...my kids have grown up just enough, they are more independent, no more tears {if there were any} and it's full steam ahead. So, while the beginning of the year is sheer torture for me...it's worth it, because I do ABSOLUTELY LOVE first grade!!!!!

  4. I love first grade and can't see myself teaching any other. My least favorite part of the year is the first month or so when they still act like kindergartners. :)

  8. Besides subbing (which I *loved*), I have always taught 5th grade. I've been offered other grades and did one year teaching both 4th and 5th, but 5th is where my heart is! I can't imagine doing anything else. They "get me;" they watch the same TV as me, get my jokes, and aren't jaded yet. They are goofy and growing up but still kids!

  9. I teach first grade, but my favorite is second. I taught second for seven years. Second graders still love their teacher but they are becoming a bit more independent. I love Brand New Readers. My daughter got her start reading with those books!

  10. I'm a Kinder fan as well. It's so much fun watching them grow. I did loop up with a group to 1st once and would be willing to do that again-but Kinder is where my heart is! :)

  11. Kindergarten is where all the cool teachers are! I've taught K for 4 years now and LOVE it. It's a passion and a way of life for me. This wasn't the case when they moved me to K ...then this 33 year old man cried to his mommy. True story.

I hope my blogs become one of your favorites! Thanks for checking me out!
